I'D LIKE TO GO TO AFRICA (reply)

I used to have nightmares when I was a little kid after watching the cannibals on the Congo chasing Tarzan through the jungle with their spears so they could cook him in a big pot. Those same cannibals were chasing me in my dreams.

Books of Africa .. The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency (reply)

There are 20 some books in this series by Alexander McCall Smith. I've only read about 12 of them but they are excellent. You can learn a lot about African culture from them. They are set in Botswana but what he writes applies to much of African native culture.

I have read some of his books.... (reply)

In this one Allan Quatermain's antagonist is a feral woman raised by baboons. A real nail biter ! First time I read it I fetched a heavy sixgun and a flashlight and looked under all of the beds and behind doors and shower curtains and in closets, cupboards and wardrobes, etc.

The last lines of your poem reminded me of this. If you, like most of us, abhor and repudiate the occult, you might baulk at reading this book but stay with it and the "moral" of the story will be worth it.

I'D LIKE TO GO TO AFRICA

I'd like to go to Africa
To walk on the red earth in the bright sunlight
To experience the village life
And see the night stars without interference of city lights
Where voices can be heard a half mile away
And children play without benefit of electronics
I want to see the mama's cooking over the fire
And the girls hauling water
The children running carefree
With their little brother or sister on their back
Where yesterday can be forgotten
And tomorrow is not a worry
I want to hear the children singing as they play
And the mamas as they sweep the dirt
I want to be in a mud church and listen to the harmonies
That sound like angels singing
And the beating of the drums
That echo life's rhythms
Yes, I want to go to Africa and sit in the sun
Letting all the rush of western life slowly seep out of my soul
Sitting in the dirt with those who have nothing by our standards
But who possess much of what we have forgotten
I want to see the Love of Jesus touch the beggar
And capture the heart of the bandit
And influence the direction of a nation
One village at a time

Yes .. I would like to go to Africa again.
